From the Pastor
Our church is like a butterfly in so many ways. The butterfly has been a symbol among Christians for centuries reminding them about spiritual transformation that comes in the Christian experience. First Presbyterian Church, Lonoke, Arkansas, has been living on the Arkansas prairie for over 160 years. There have been a lot of changes and it has changed whenever it was needed to be able to share its faith with the community it has served so faithfully.
The butterfly also reminds our congregation about the unique way we serve God as reformed Christians. Beginning with Martin Luther, then John Calvin, and John Knox our church has been around since the 1500s. A central idea in our church is that not only are we committed to things like grace alone and scripture alone as basic tenets of faith but we also say "reformed and always reforming." Like the butterfly, we are a different church than we were 160 years ago yet we are still living out our DNA as a community of believers under the Lordship of Christ.
First Presbyterian Church, Lonoke, Arkansas, established in 1848, is a historic Presbyterian Church, United States of America (PCUSA) congregration. It has been at
its present location since 1918 when the sanctuary, designed by John Parks Almond, was built. Before then there were two buildings. The congregation has 125 active members with many members and friends scattered throughout the world. We even have family in Germany and Greece!
As pastor of this congregation since 2002, I can tell you that this is one of the finest churches I have ever served. The gracious people here are always open to caring and sharing opportunities. They are active in missions and ministries. They give of themselves in so many ways to our church and our community. Among us there are school teachers, farmers, medical professionals, accountants, clerical staff, a state legislator, bankers, and business owners. There are retired people, young and mature adults--really a cross section of the town. We are an inter-generational church from toddlers to retirees all sharing together as a family. I hope you will get to know us and should God lead you, become a part of our family. It is truly our hope to make our home in God who makes God's home in us.
